John A. "Coach" Mahar, 76, of Syracuse, NY, died November 6, 2005.
He was born in Syracuse and graduated from St. Lucy's in 1949. He attended
Oswego State College, and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was employed
for the City of Syracuse Police Department as a criminal investigator from
1955 until his retirement in 1979. He worked as the first police officer at
Corcoran High School. Following retirement he worked in security and
maintenance for Niagara Mohawk. He was a former IAABO and CBOA basketball
official for 22 years. He was a member of the Pastimes, Old Rascals, PBA,
Fraternal Order of Police, and the American Legion. Coach was an avid golfer.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Ellen Ott Mahar; daughter, Peggy
Mahar of Camillus; and son, John (Joanie) Mahar of Onondaga Hill. He is also
survived by four granddaughters, Ashley Meigs, Kayla, Jennifer Meigs, and
Brittney; brothers, Thomas (Ann) Mahar of Onondaga Hill and Edward Mahar of
Lakeland, FL; cousins, Patricia Beck and Francis Mahar; several nieces,
nephews and close friends. Services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at
the Edward J. Ryan and Son Funeral Home, 3180 Bellevue Ave. and 11 a.m. at
St. Lucy's Church. Burial will be in Onondaga County Veterans Memorial
Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
